How to Rotate a Sideways PDF Page on iPhone
Rotate a sideways PDF page by changing the page orientation in a PDF editor, then saving and reopening the document. Rotating your iPhone changes your view, not necessarily the page stored in the file. On supported iOS versions, Preview provides page rotation controls. Work on a duplicate when the original matters, change only the affected pages, and inspect a separate saved copy. For a PDF you are still building from pictures, correcting each source image before conversion can be simpler than fixing the finished packet afterward.
Check whether the page or the screen is sideways
Open the PDF with the phone held upright. If every part of the interface turns when you move the phone but the document reads correctly relative to its page edges, you may only be seeing screen rotation. If the text runs sideways within the page, the file needs a page-level change. Screenshotting a rotated view is an unnecessary detour that can lose text quality.
Inspect more than the first page. A scan packet can mix portrait forms and landscape tables intentionally. The aim is readable content, not forcing every page into the same shape. A wide chart may be best left landscape while a sideways receipt needs turning.
Correct the affected page
- Duplicate the PDF and open the copy in Preview or another editor that supports page rotation.
- Move to the page that is actually sideways.
- Use the available rotation command in the document controls. Apple’s guide describes Rotate Left and Rotate Right in Preview.
- Check neighboring pages so you understand which page or selection changed.
- Save the copy, close it, and reopen it from Files.
- Look at print preview if the document will be printed.
A successful on-screen adjustment is not enough if it was only a temporary view setting. Reopening the actual file helps distinguish a stored page change from a viewer preference. The recipient should not need instructions to rotate their screen for every second page.
Avoid introducing another layout problem
Turning the content and changing the paper dimensions are different operations. Rotating a page can leave it landscape, which may be correct. Stretching or cropping to make it portrait can remove information or distort the text. If the destination requires a fixed paper size, inspect scaling and margins after rotation.
For a PDF created from photographs, return to the originals if several pages are misaligned. Rotate those image copies, then rebuild with Image to PDF. Choose the page orientation that suits the material and inspect each thumbnail before exporting. Our PDF print preparation guide covers A4, Letter, margins, and scaling.
When rotation does not solve readability
A perspective-skewed photograph can still be difficult to read after a 90-degree turn. Rotation cannot square up a page captured at an angle or restore missing corners. Rescan that page if you have access to the paper. For an important form, small print near an edge should be fully visible before you share it.
A cropped or low-resolution source also stays cropped or low resolution. Use the blurry PDF troubleshooting guide when the problem is detail rather than direction. Keep those problems separate so you do not apply a compression setting to a page that simply needs a better capture.
Practical questions
Will rotation make the file smaller?
Do not count on it. Page orientation is a presentation change, not a compression target. If file size changes during export, compare quality and document features rather than treating any reduction as automatically beneficial.
Can I rotate a protected or signed file?
Follow its restrictions and the recipient’s requirements. Editing a signed PDF can affect signature validity. Preserve the original and ask for a corrected source when modifying it is inappropriate.
Why does it look correct on my phone but wrong elsewhere?
You may have changed only a viewer setting, opened an older attachment, or saved a different copy. Give the corrected file a distinct name, open it in another viewer when possible, and attach that exact version. Check all pages rather than only the thumbnail used in the sending app.
