1080p vs 4K: Which Should You Record?
Match the recording dimensions to your edit, destination, and available storage.
Decide how much reframing you need
A higher-resolution source can give you more room to crop for a smaller final frame. That can help when turning one landscape recording into a tighter shot, but it does not correct poor focus or camera shake. If the framing is final and the destination only needs a smaller picture, a lower-resolution capture may be sufficient.
Separate dimensions from size
A 3840 × 2160 frame has four times as many pixels as 1920 × 1080. That does not guarantee a fourfold file-size difference: encoding settings and bitrate matter. Compare a short sample in the actual modes you plan to use instead of assuming a fixed ratio.
Make the decision before a long session
List the destination’s requirements, whether you need to crop later, and how much storage you can spare. Check that your editor and receiving device can open the recording format. For an important event, avoid changing several camera settings immediately before recording; a familiar, checked workflow is easier to troubleshoot.
After editing, export a version sized for the recipient and keep the original if future reframing is likely. Use Aspect Ratio Calculator to plan the final proportions.
