How Large Can You Print a Photo?

Convert pixels to inches and separate a useful estimate from a quality promise.

Use the pixel dimensions

Print width in inches equals pixel width divided by the chosen pixels per inch. For a 3600 × 2400 photo, 300 PPI gives 12 × 8 inches. At 200 PPI the same pixels cover 18 × 12 inches, with fewer pixels per inch. The Photo Size Calculator does this arithmetic.

Consider the source and viewing distance

A technically large file can still be out of focus. Inspect the original at a realistic size, particularly faces and small lettering. A large wall print viewed from across a room has different demands from a small print examined closely. Ask the printer about the intended material and size.

Account for the crop

A 4:3 photo and a 3:2 print are different shapes. Filling the paper may cut away the top and bottom or sides. Decide which parts must remain and preview the printer’s crop rather than relying only on a pixel count.

Changing a resolution label does not create detail. Keep the original and make a separate export using the printer’s requested dimensions, color requirements, and file format.
