Why Does My Video Export Have No Sound?
When an exported video has no sound, compare the original, the editor preview, and the saved export before changing anything. Confirm volume and the audio output device, check whether the source contains sound, and inspect muted clips or missing audio tracks in the project. If the preview is audible but the export is silent, make a short new export and test it in another compatible player. Keep the project and source files. A missing soundtrack, a playback problem, and an unsupported audio format need different fixes.
Find where sound disappears
Use three checkpoints: the unedited source, the current project, and the exported file. A failure at each point suggests a different next step. This is more useful than repeatedly exporting the same settings or reinstalling an editor before you know what is wrong.
- Play a known-working video and check the phone’s volume and output device.
- Play the original source outside your editor.
- Preview the relevant section of the project with its audio controls visible.
- Open the saved export directly in Photos or Files.
- Compare a short sample in another player that supports the file.
- Record which checkpoint first becomes silent before making a change.
Disconnect an unintended Bluetooth output or switch back to the intended speaker if sound is going somewhere else. A quiet phone is not evidence that the exported file lacks an audio track.
If the original is silent
Inspect another recording made the same way. A screen recording, a clip downloaded from a service, and a camera recording do not necessarily contain the same kinds of audio. Content protection and app recording behavior can restrict what is captured; an editor cannot restore audio that was never included.
For your own future recordings, check relevant microphone access and make a short test before recording something important. Permission changes affect a subsequent recording; they cannot repair an old silent file. Our microphone permission guide explains how to review access without assuming every app should receive it.
If the project preview is silent
Look for a muted source clip, track volume set to zero, or an audio layer that begins later on the timeline. Move the playhead to the section that should contain sound. A music layer may be shorter than the video or may refer to a source that is no longer available.
Where your editor shows missing media, restore the original file or reconnect it using the editor’s supported workflow. Avoid deleting the project or moving all its source files while troubleshooting. Keep a copy before changing several settings, and change one thing at a time so you can tell which adjustment mattered.
If only the export is silent
Check whether the export settings include audio. Then render a short section that you know contains sound. Save it with a new name so you do not accidentally keep opening the previous silent export.
Video and audio can use different codecs inside the same container. One player may decode the video while failing to play its audio. MOV versus MP4 explains why an extension is not a complete compatibility description. If the sound works elsewhere, choose an export combination supported by the intended destination rather than assuming the original recording was bad.
If the recipient hears nothing
Send the verified file by a second route when practical, or ask the recipient to open the downloaded file in a compatible player. Confirm that a messaging preview is not muted independently of the phone’s media volume. A service may also process a video after upload, so compare the local export with the version actually received.
Do not keep adding background music to mask an unresolved problem. You may unintentionally replace important speech or create a permissions issue. Fix the intended soundtrack first, then check whether your sharing route preserves it.
Keep a repeatable export check
Before sending a final clip, listen at the beginning, around any edits, and near the end. Check duration, orientation, and file size at the same time. The Video Size Calculator can help plan a transfer, but it cannot inspect or repair an audio track.
Will converting to MP3 fix missing sound?
Only if an accessible audio track exists and the issue is the current playback or format workflow. Extracting from a video with no audio cannot invent the missing recording.
Should I reinstall the editor first?
Preserve projects and source media before considering it. Start with the checkpoint comparison; reinstalling can remove useful local project data without addressing the cause.
